Retin A for Acne Scars – Does Retin-A Work?

Retin A is prescription-only medication for both acne and anti-aging. Made out of vitamin A, it enhances the functioning of skin molecules resulting in cell growth and regeneration as well as collagen production. As an acne treatment, it also helps to get rid of blackheads and whiteheads. It is usually given in small doses by a dermatologist and should be used gradually over time.

You can see results from Retin A treatment after a few months to a year. It’s not an overnight cure for acne but it helps your skin to renew itself and is very useful for removing acne marks and acne scars. Some side effects of Retin A include redness of the skin and a greater sensitivity to sunlight. It is highly recommended that one wear sunscreen while using Retin A and avoid strong sunlight during the daytime.

Extra care must be taken to ensure that there is adequate sun protection or your skin will turn redder and hyper-pigmentation might occur, resulting in you have lighter or darker patches of facial skin. Other side effects include peeling of the skin and dry/flaky skin. To combat this, it is recommended that you use a good moisturizer after applying Retin A.

How does Retin A work for acne? Retin A helps to renew your skin by removing acne follicles. It helps to exfoliate the skin and reduce post acne pigmentation (dark acne marks). When used alongside a good micro-dermabrasion regime, it can really enhance the penetration of the Retin A vitamins to enhance skin renewal.

One downside is that initial treatment with Retin A may make your acne even worse because its trying to purge the acne causing bacteria. So your acne will tend to get worse in the first few weeks before eventually getting much better. A Retin-A topical gel costs upwards of US $50 and can be obtained easily with consultion with a skin doctor.

Do note that pregnant women might be allergic to Retin A because it is a concentrated form of Vitamin A so do check with your doctor before using it.

Available in both gel and cream form, you can use Retin A everyday, preferably at night. Apply it after you wash your face (wait 10 minutes after washing) and put on a light moisturizer after applying it to ensure that your skin doesn’t get too flaky or dehydrated. Do not use with other acne medication like benzoyl peroxide, which can be used during the day instead.

When used alongside oral antibiotics for acne, Retin-A can be a very powerful tool to help acne sufferers get clear skin gradually. It doesn’t work immediately but it does wonders to help make sure that you don’t have much acne scars. You may want to learn about how to get rid of acne scars and good luck!
