Vitamin B5 Helps Fight Acne by Regulating Your Hormones

Vitamin B5 or Pantothenic acid is an essential vitamin for humans.  Vitamin B5’s main role is to help synthesize coenzyme A and process proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Scientific research has found vitamin B5 to be highly effective against hormone related acne.  In Dr. Lit-Hung Leung’s 1995 study, Asian male and female subjects were administered high doses of vitamin B5 in both oral and topical forms. The test subjects saw significant improvement of skin tone, deduction of pore size and sebum levels.

According to Dr. Leung, coenzyme A, a regulator of the body’s hormones and fatty acids, chooses to produce androgens whenever pantothenic acid is scarce. Androgen is a male hormone which promotes excessive sebum production. Excessive sebum clogging the pores results in acne.

It is easy to add pantothenic acid in your diet. Foods that are rich in Vitamin B5 are whole grain foods, legumes, meats, yogurt, eggs, royal jelly and avocados. Simply substitute white flour and rice with the least processed of whole grains and rice (with bran intact).

Processing foods incorrectly can also damage vitamin b5 levels. Avoid freezing foods as it can diminish up to 21-70 percent of the vitamin. Canning foods can also cause much nutrient loss. Eat plenty of fresh produce instead of frozen and canned foods.

Vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, shiitake and crimini mushrooms, corn and winter squash are excellent vegetable sources of vitamin b5. Sunflower seeds are also very high in the vitamin B5. Try adding them to your salads. The highest available sources of pantothenic acid are found mainly in meats, cold water fish ovaries, calf liver and royal jelly. Daily intake of vitamin B5 can greatly aid in controlling acne.
