Jojoba Oil for Acne

Jojoba oil (pronounced as Jo-Ho-Ba) is a natural moisturizer for the skin. Extracted from the seeds of the Jojoba plant, Jojoba oil is a wax ester rather than an oil. Its consistency is rather thick. Jojoba oil is very close to the skin’s biological oil. This is why many swear by Jojoba oil as a natural moisturizer.

Jojoba oil is great for acne. Acne is formed by the combination of bacteria contact with oil secretions on the skin. This is where jojoba oil comes into play. Jojoba oil has anti-bacteria and fungicial action which can help prevent the formation of acne. It can also reduce sebum production in hyper-oily skins.

University of Michigan did a research on bacteria and fungi reactions with jojoba oil. They have found that 5 common skin bacteria are unable to thrive in jojoba oil. These bacteria include pseudomonas aeruginosus, staphylococcus aureus and fungus candida. Compared to other oils, jojoba is considered to be non-irritating. It absorbs into the skin very well and does not aggravate acne conditions, making it an excellent moisturizer for acne-prone skin.

This is good news for acne sufferers! Applying a thin layer of jojoba oil can stop skin bacteria from festering on your skin and slow down oil production as well. You can add jojoba oil into your daily facial regime after applying a bacteria-killing topical gel for sebum control.

It is important to monitor the appropriate amount of jojoba oil to be used on your face. As oily skins and temperate climates requires less moisture, try 1-2 drops first. Observe the level of hydration after the oil haven sunken into your skin. The skin should not be overly shiny or oily after 5 minutes of application. Dryer skin and climate conditions especially due to the consumption of Accutane as well as a larger face may need more drops of jojoba oil.

Try making your own anti-acne moisturizer by mixing  jojoba oil with other essential oils such as tea tree or lavender for more bacteria fighting action. Jojoba oil can also be mixed with carrier oils such as castor and extra virgin olive oils and massaged into the skin for luxurious body treatment.
